In this thesis, I first detail the history and applicable norms of United Nations peacekeeping operations, to include the use of force in self- defense as applicable to "classical" peacekeeping operations. I briefly examine the recent Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel. I then illustrate how the "principles and spirit" of the international law of armed conflict have been followed in traditional peacekeeping operations, as well as during robust operations. I explain how, in practice, the international law of armed conflict has been followed in United Nations peace-enforcement operations. Additionally, I argue the importance of keeping clear distinctions between United Nations peacekeeping and peace- enforcement operations.Air Force Inst of Tech Wright-Patterson AFB OH is the author of 'United Nations Peace Operations : The Applicable Norms and the Application of the Law of Armed Conflict', published 2000 under ISBN 9781423535348 and ISBN 1423535340.
