Transit Management in the Northwest Passage : Problems and Prospects

The operation of a commercial shipping route through the Northwest Passage is fast becoming a practical possibility, and consideration of the problems this will raise is urgently necessary. The Dalhousie Ocean Studies Programme at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, has therefore initiated a four-year programme called the Canadian Northern Waters Project. This is the first result of the project. The work brings together, in chapters by different authors, a description of the environment, possible economic uses of the area, Arctic sea transport technology, the politico-administrative setting, and the designing of a transit management system taking all these factors into account.
