Virginia Houston's original paintings and commissions of the past 25 years are found in many homes, public and private collections, government offices in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as abroad. Her Limited Edition prints are sold in most Newfoundland galleries, while her very popular works entitled "Sunday Afternoon on George Street" and "Earlier Memories"( St. John's Harbour, circa 1955) are prominently displayed in many homes throughout North America and Europe. Timeless Treasures is a culmination of over 20 years of research on the vanishing face of Newfoundland and Labrador; all paintings in these publications range from 50 to over 200 years into the past. After retiring from over 30 years of teaching full-time, she began to concentrate on a life-long goal of painting the lost and changed communities of her native province. She was intrigued by the stories of communities and architecture that were lost or radically changed as a result of many factors, including the controversial resettlement programs initiated by several Smallwood governments between 1954 and 1972; by changing economic times; and by natural and man-made disasters such as those wrought by the relentless North Atlantic or the devastation of the cod fishery. She realized that much of the history of Newfoundland and Labrador was vanishing before her eyes and began her research and painting to restore them to life, so to speak.Houston, Virginia Frances is the author of 'Timeless Treasures, Vol. 2 : Historical Newfoundland in Art', published 2005 under ISBN 9781895814194 and ISBN 1895814197.
