Dudley Pope was a distinguished naval historian. Discharged from the British Merchant Navy during World War II due to his injuries, Pope became the naval and defense correspondent at the London Daily News. Forester as his successor and ardent readers of nautical fiction have confirmed the wisdom of Forester's choice.
