Project Elvyn An Experiment in Electronic Journal Delivery Facts, Figures and Findings

As the size, number, & costs of scholarly journals continues to rise, it has been increasingly difficult for academic libraries to maintain comprehensive research collections. When "journals" are distributed as free floating information on the Internet, problems stemming from the lack of bibliographic control & poor training of users may arise. Project ELVYN was designed to test an alternative, yet equally feasible scenario: direct electronic delivery of journals to libraries by the publisher. Developed with Institute of Physics Publishing Division to coincide with the launch of their new journal, MODELING & SIMULATION IN MATERIALS SCIENCE & ENGINEERING, the project tracked preferred delivery routes by libraries, the variety of technical options now available, implementation at various university sites, & pricing.
