This is the true story of a girl, born in the U.S. of Greekparents, who is trapped in Greece during the Nazi-fascist occupation in World War II. After her father returns to the U.S., her mother is left alone to support two under-age children for the next five and a half years. Their life is a real odyssey. The horrors and monstrosities of war bring her, and those around her, face to face with the constant threat of death by hunger, disease, exposure to the elements, or by enemy bullets. As refugees, they spend two and a half years running to the mountains to hide from frequent enemy raids that constantly keep them on the alert. During this period the girl becomes fired up by the countrywide struggle for freedom from the oppressors. This leads her to take an active part in the youth liberation movement of Greece. Later she becomes a leader who risks her life to fight for the ideals that she believes in, and to save her family from starvation and want. While seeking independence and freedom she achieves a heightened sense of self-realization as she emerges into womanhood.
