SUMMARY

During the time between the Great Depression and the time this story took place, there were many Americans who were almost starving because there was little or no work and hardly no money to be had. There was also the problem of racism in the South and these two things caused much hardship on the blacks of the time. This book is about a black family that was allowed to go live on a farm in west central Arkansas, if they would tend the fences and take care of the farm. It also tells of the troubles and joys of the family, the Wards, and how they coped. It also tells the story of the white family, the Vourghs, which lived on the lower half of the section of land that made up the two farms of Mill Creek Bottom. It also tells of how they befriended the Wards, worked together to feed themselves and their families. It also tells how they defend themselves of the hatred of some of the local folks who thought that there should not be any blacks living in the county, simply because there had never beenany blacks in the county before the Wards showed up. There are killings and threats, as well as good times, and joyful occasions, throughout the book, and it shows what life was really like in those bygone days. The book also deals with the responsibility that was placed on the children of those days and how they had to work and do chores daily to keep life going. There is some rough language in Mill Creek Bottom and some violence, but both are necessary in order to give a good example of the way people spoke and acted, in the South, in the late thirties, and to show some of the attitudes that prevailed back then.Pherka, K. F. is the author of 'Mill Creek Bottom' with ISBN 9781420821871 and ISBN 1420821873.
