SUMMARY

Inter-Plays works and words of writers and critics (A Festschrift published in honor of Albert Reiner Glaap) are a collection of literary and critical texts. Well-known contemporary authors wrote the literary texts from Canada, Great Britain, and New Zealand. With only a few exceptions, all texts included in this volume are published here for the very first time. In order to widen the readers understanding each literary contribution is followed by a critical commentary of a university scholar with the intention of providing a first interpretation and thus putting the text in perspective with regard to its meaning, its position among the other works of its author and discussing its context. Albert Reiner Glaap was bo in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia on September 1, 1929. Having attended the local grammar school, he went to the university of Cologne in 1950, where he too his Derry in English, Latin, and Philosophy. From 1952 to 1953 he was a student at King's College, London, and in 1955 he was awarded a doctorate for his dissertation, entitled Bishop Hall's Virgidemiarum, seen as written in imitation of Juvenal: A contribution to the beginnings of English satire. Albert Reiner Glaap began his career as a teacher of English and Latin at the Luisengymnasium in Dusseldorf, where he taught from 1956 until 1971. During this period he took a year off to teach at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia (1961/1962), and also became tutor in charge of trainee teachers of English in the Dusseldorf area from 1963 to 1971. In 1971 he became director of the pedagogical Institute (an institute for in service teacher training) in Dusseldorff before being offered a professorship at the teacher training college of North Rhine Westphalia in Neuss in 1973. Since 1980 he has held the post of Professor of English at the heinrich Heine University of Dusseldorf. His main fields of interest and study have been Canadian Literature, especially Canadian drama, contemporary English Literature, New Zealand Literature, methodology of English language teaching and problems of literary translation.
