Industrial Organization in a Dichotomous Economy: The Case of Taiwan

The economic performance of Taiwan, as one of the 'Four Dragons', is often described as rapid growth with equality. However, one important characteristic of the market structure in Taiwan is a so-called dichotomous economy in which the domestic market is, on the one hand, occupied by large firms and is more monopolistic; and, on the other hand, the export market is dominated by small and medium enterprises and is highly competitive. The author brings together nine related articles of his to analyse this phenomenon. The book provides readers with the successful story of Taiwan's development from the industrial organization's point of view. Two contributions could be emphasized in this book.
