Celebrated for his paintings of rural life in his native province of Qu bec, Clarence Gagnon was invited in 1928 to create illustrations for the first colour edition of Louis H mon's novel Maria Chapdelaine. Using chalk, gouache, pastel and graphite on paper, the artist prepared 54 mixed-media drawings which were a skillful evocation of the dialogue with nature -- the forest, the land and the cycle of life and death -- that so engaged the characters of this best-selling story.
