Count on Cooney for good, humorous stories set within the high school milieu. Count on her also to occasionally suprise, as she does in this darkly funny story of Jennie, a brilliant overachiever. Told in the diary entries of Jennie and five other juniors, the story peaks when Jennie walks out of a contest that would guarantee her a place in Connecticut history. While the various voices are not always distinct, they do advance the plot. Cruelty reigns at Cooney's high school, but only until students and adults come to their senses.
