Alexander Johnston (1849-1889) was an American historian who edited American Eloquence which is re-edited by James Albert Woodburn. Johnston was born in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, graduated from Rutgers College in 1870, and was admitted to the bar in 1875 in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he taught in the Rutgers College grammar school from 1876 to 1879. He was principal of the Latin school of Norwalk, Connecticut, in 1879-1883, and was professor of jurisprudence and political economy in the College of New Jersey (Princeton University) from 1884 until his death in Princeton, New Jersey in 1889. James Albert Woodburn (1856-1943), was an American Professor, author, editor and historian.
